Bowie Dick Test: disposable, ready-to-use package for assessing steam penetration in Class B autoclaves .
Tests air removal in saturated steam autoclaves with fractionated vacuum and the relative vacuum conditions inside the autoclave.
Highlights instances of autoclave malfunctioning.
Following the vacuum phases, the chemical indicator on the Test Card changes colour to dark, indicating that sufficient air has been removed to allow steam to fully penetrate. If residual air has been trapped during the vapour phase, the colour change will be incomplete and uneven.

- Daily
- After any repair or maintenance work
- If the autoclave is moved.

Operating conditions: 134 °C for 3.5 minutes or 121 for 15 minutes °C
Indication of colour change: pink to dark.
Usage:
- place the BD Test Pack inside the empty sterilisation chamber on the bottom shelf above the drain, with the foil chemical indicator strips facing upwards.
- perform the test with the chamber empty; the test is accurate when performed with the chamber empty. Do not use the cycle to sterilise any devices or packs.
- start the cycle to sterilise or test if the autoclave has a specific one. Remove the BD Test Pack from the autoclave.
- open the BD Test Pack and examine the BD Test Sheet. The test is considered positive if the chemical indicator has evenly and uniformly turned the prescribed colour. The autoclave cycle phase works.
- Record the information and retain the Test.
