Details

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are ingredients recognised for their exfoliating and stimulating properties for skin renewal and regeneration.

They are also known as 'fruit acids' because most of them occur naturally in fruit.

For example, malic acid in apples, glycolic acid in sugar cane, citric acid in citrus fruits, while lactic acid is a by-product of some species of bacteria, but is found naturally in many fruits such as pineapple and blueberry.

The name AHA refers to the chemical structure of all these molecules, which are able to 'break' the bonds that bind together the cells and the superficial layers of the skin, composed mainly of keratin. This is why the action of AHAs is also known as keratolytic activity, because they remove the layer of dead and superficial cells, stimulating cell regeneration.

They remove dead cells from the surface of the skin, promoting and stimulating cell renewal.
